RTOS - About us!

"... Proving that Rotherham Teachers' Operatic Society is not qualified for the fusty, carousel-obsessed stereotypes of small town am-dram groups elsewhere in the country, it's members bounced on to stage to the deliver this vibrant production..."
- Advertiser Review

The Society was formed in 1913 by a group of teachers who all enjoyed the operas of Gilbert & Sullivan. The first production in 1914 was The Gondoliers performed at the Empire. It was a great success both financially and artistically, the Society was well established and the week at the theatre was THE event of the year. Patrons included many of the local dignitaries and business people of the area. Friends of the Society were numerous and provided financial and practical help both on and off stage. Granville Naylor, our first treasurer, was one of the founder members together with Ethel Rushforth and Walter Midgley.

In 1922 the Hipperdrome became the venue for productions before moving on to the Theatre Royal in 1930 and the empire in 1934. Both wars interrupted the activities of the Society but we returned as soon as possible to the production of shows and some years we put on two in the same year, one being Gilbert & Sullivan and the other a more modern show. In 1960 The Civic Theatre opened and we had a great success with "The Merry Widow".

There have been numerous producers and officials through the years, all have given tirelessly of their time and expertise, we thank them all! It proves more difficult as the years go by to find suitable shows to bring to the Rotherham audiences but we continue to bring to you well loved and popular 'old' shows such as Guys and Dolls and Carousel. However, we have performed many new shows in recent years such as Crazy for You, Singing In The Rain, 42nd Street and Chess, Copacobana and the much loved Disneys Beauty and the Beast. In November 2005 we proudly presented a sell-out, FAME. The follow up show the year after was 42nd Street which once again got rave reviews and was compared to a Professional West End Show. The show for 2011 was Beauty and The Beast and was a huge success.

In 2002 we were very proud to introduce our Student Academy who have been a great asset to the society and over the past 5 years they have been with us they have produced shows like Bugsy Malone, Seussical the Musical, West Side Story, Les Miserables and Our House. 2012 was a great success with RTOS bringing another first to rotherham with the show Jekyll and Hyde. 2013 was also another special year. Not only did we perform another first for Rotherham, Jesus Christ Superstar, it was also our 100th birthday. The society was formed in 1913 and every year since then RTOS have aimed to produce professional standard shows!

Next for Rotherham Teachers Operatic's will be the Academy Award Winning Production ... West Side Story
